Launched in summer 2023, CraneRIDES is a next-generation, 100 percent electric autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttle and a cornerstone of the community’s mass transportation strategy. The service connects regional transit systems to employment centers and residential areas between I-4 and the Altamonte Springs SunRail Station, supporting both near-term mobility needs and long-term economic resilience.
AV systems offer safe, reliable and convenient access to high-traffic districts. CraneRIDES strengthens connectivity to local destinations, making it easier for residents and visitors to access shopping, dining, jobs and recreation. As a regional destination with MSA-level economic impact and more than 95 million cars passing through annually, Altamonte Springs benefits from an integrated, tech-enabled transportation network that supports both daily convenience and economic activity.
CraneRIDES is a partnership between Altamonte Springs and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) intended to serve as a model for autonomous mobility in communities across Florida.
Phased Expansion
- Phase 1 (2023) - Connected the Altamonte Mall, Renaissance Centre, Cranes Roost Park and AMC Theatre, allowing easy movement among major shopping, dining and entertainment destinations without relocating a vehicle.
- Phase 2 (June 2025) - Expanded service to AdventHealth Altamonte, one of the region’s largest employers and healthcare providers. The route serves staff during shift changes, patients heading to appointments and families visiting loved ones, while enhancing access to nearby businesses.
- Phase 3 (Spring 2026) - Will extend to the Altamonte Springs SunRail Station, improving transfers to regional rail and the LYNX bus system. Plans also include reaching Central Parkway, Emerson Plaza, Sanctuary at CenterPointe and The CenterPointe. These expansions will integrate residential, commercial and entertainment hubs, reducing reliance on personal vehicles.
Partnerships, Funding and Leadership
FDOT designated Altamonte Springs as a testbed and awarded a Service Development Grant covering half of the $2.4 million in operating costs during the first three years. The State of Florida also provided $750,000 to support service expansion.
Operated by Beep, a global leader in AV operations, CraneRIDES demonstrates safe, efficient and reliable technology that connects residents, workers and visitors to key destinations. Supported by the local business community, the program offers a replicable model for municipal deployment and contributes to economic development by improving access to jobs, services and events.
A Model for Florida Communities
Altamonte Springs and FDOT have a long history of collaboration in advancing transportation innovation that drives economic value. Through this program, FDOT is collecting insights that will inform AV policy, technology and deployment strategies across other municipalities, helping shape the future of modern, sustainable mobility in Florida.
