FSU student interns post in front of an FDOT Road Ranger truck

A Closer Look

The City partnered with the Florida State University Real Estate Center to offer a distinctive summer internship program that provided students with firsthand experience in real estate development within a municipal setting. The initiative gave emerging professionals a rare opportunity to apply academic knowledge in real-world environments while gaining insight into how development projects move from concept to approval in local government.

Through AGīL, the City designed an immersive eight-week program that connected academic learning with hands-on experience in the public sector. The internship provided students with a comprehensive understanding of real estate development from a local government perspective, exposing them to the regulatory requirements and approval processes that shape successful projects.

Interns engaged directly with professional staff, participated in key meetings and contributed to real-world tasks tied to project review and development oversight. Each week focused on a critical component of the development lifecycle:

  • Week 1 | Development & Site Plan Review
  • Week 2 | Building Code, Fire Code & Code Enforcement
  • Week 3 | Transportation Planning & Autonomous Vehicle Operations
  • Week 4 | Building Code, Fire Code & Code Enforcement
  • Week 5 | Long-Range Planning
  • Week 6 | Utility Planning
  • Week 7 | Construction Site Inspections
  • Week 8 | Stormwater Planning

Participants also took part in weekly Lunch and Learn sessions featuring professional skill-building workshops on topics such as:

  • Mastering Outlook & Calendar for Professional Efficiency
  • Resume & Personal Brand Development
  • Ethics in Real Estate
  • Additional Career-Enhancing Insights from Industry Professionals

This real-world experience gave students a competitive edge in the job market by deepening their understanding of essential governmental processes and elevating their professional readiness.

During this internship, I gained a great amount of valuable industry knowledge. It gave me meaningful context for my career by helping me understand how a government entity operates within the real estate development process. I also improved my communication skills and became more confident speaking with professionals. I am grateful for this opportunity.

This diverse program gave me a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that influence successful real estate projects. Working with transportation and utilities teams taught me how critical infrastructure planning is to commercial development. Long range planning and growth management opened my eyes to the importance of strategic vision in shaping the future of a community.

The most rewarding experience I have had with my time at the City was definitely the relationships built with my peers and mentors and the transformative opportunities that have come with exposure to industry knowledge. Overall, this internship solidified my passion for commercial real estate development by showing me how multidisciplinary collaboration and careful planning come together to create thriving developments.
